A career as a HGV/LGV Driver can be very rewarding as there is very good demand for the right people who have gone through the correct training. The options are better than they were a number of years ago as the minimum age for driving a HGV is now 18 years old, therefore opening this up to the younger generation of drivers.

As you can see, there is every reason to believe that you can become a qualified HGV driver and have a long term career from a younger age.

HGV Training Requirements in Brief:

Minimum age is now 18 for all classes of HGV/LGV
As per any Driving Licence you must be physically able to drive
You must pass a HGV medical

HGV/LGV Categories

There are 3 Categories of vehicles and depending on which one you will be driving there are different licensing requirements:

Category C1 – Minimum age 18 Years old
Category C – Minimum age 18 Years old
Category C+E – Minimum age 18years old

HGV and LGV Driver CPC

The Driver Certificate of Professional Competence is needed to allow anyone to drive professionally. The CPC requirement is needed across all the Categories C, C1 and C + E

Depending on the type of load you will be carrying then you may need more HGV training. For example if you are transporting Dangerous Goods then an ADR Licence is needed to do this. Although the training and costs increase HGV drivers who have an ADR Licence can certainly achieve a higher salary.

HGV Training Schools
